Swaddling Newborns: Perspectives on Infant Health in Indonesia

The use of swaddling on newborns is a traditional practice that is still widely practiced in Indonesia. Swaddling is believed to provide benefits such as warmth, comfort, and help shape the baby's body. However, this practice also poses risks if not done correctly. This research is a literature review that examines 9 scientific articles from the PubMed, Google Scholar, and Garuda databases, published between 2017 and 2023. The analysis was conducted to evaluate public perception, benefits, and health risks from the use of swaddling in babies. The results of the study show that positive perceptions of bedong are still dominant in the community, especially in areas with strong cultural values. However, most mothers are unaware of safe swaddling techniques. Risks such as pelvic dysplasia, hyperthermia, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) are often overlooked. Conclusion: Although the practice of swaddling is still considered culturally beneficial, evidence-based education and a transcultural approach from health workers are needed to improve maternal understanding. The integration of local wisdom and safe infant care practices is essential to support neonatal health in Indonesia.
